About SNAP-Ed
SNAP-Ed paves the way for positive behavior changes that lead to improved health for individuals and communities. The goal of SNAP-Ed is to improve the likelihood that SNAP-eligible Americans with lower income will make healthy food and lifestyle choices that prevent obesity. LGU SNAP-Ed equips SNAP participants with the information they need to make healthy food choices; prepare and store food safely; and engage in other behaviors that improve health and quality of life.
LGU SNAP-Ed programs reach people across the lifespan, with culturally appropriate programs targeting preschool, school-aged youth (K-12), adults, and seniors. Programs extend practical (and life-changing) information to people where they eat, learn, live, play, shop, and work. Of more than 360 programs in 35 states, 12% target preschoolers, 35% are delivered to youth, 31% serve adults, and 22% reach seniors.
Our programs emphasize science-based nutrition education and obesity prevention strategies. These educational interventions help to change health behaviors in ways that positively impact outcomes at the individual and population levels. SNAP-Ed uses a multi-faceted and multi-level approach that meets people where they are. Our programs respond to – and reflect – community needs.
LGU SNAP-Ed is highly effective, in part because it simultaneously leverages the vast resources of the national LGU network, yet is also deeply embedded in communities where LGU SNAP-Ed educators work and live.
